Cellphone free academic day

In November 2024, after discussion with staff, management, Seipati Shiakallis and Deanne King, the school introduced a “bell-to-bell” limitation on cellphones and smartwatches for the students in the Senior School. The decision reflected a global shift towards reducing constant connectivity, supported by research from experts, the likes of Professor Jonathan Haidt and Dr Mark Williams, who warn of its effects on attention, wellbeing and relationships.

By January 2025, we had sourced and installed a cellphone locker for each student. While this move was certainly not welcomed by the students it has had a positive impact. It has led to greater engagement in lessons and more authentic interaction at break times, and corridors are no longer filled with students walking phone in hand.

Although there has not been complete buy-in, the overall rate of compliance has been very high, and the initiative continues to foster a more focused and connected school environment.
