Prue Leith [class of 1958], OBE, CBE, is awarded a damehood in the Queen’s birthday honours.

Dr Yanila N Nyasulu-Chilongo [class of 1998] obtained a Masters in Medicine from the University of Pretoria, and is currently a specialist physician at the Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital. Dr Nyasulu-Chilongo is one of the main protagonists in a MNET documentary called Zero to Zero which covers the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the effect it has on Health Care Worker’s patients and their families.

Four Old Girls and one staff member are chosen to represent South Africa in the Tokyo Olympics: Amica Hallendorff [class of 2010], Daniela Passoni [class of 2017] and head coach Kelsey Thomson [White], for water polo; Lilian du Plessis [class of 2010] and Lisa-marie Deetlefs [class of 2005] for hockey. Unfortunately Daniela and Kelsey are unable to participate as both test positive to Covid-19 before the start of the games.

Recognition of St Mary’s historical prominence

St Mary’s is awarded a Blue Plaque by the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation to acknowledge the historical importance of the school as the oldest remaining school in Johannesburg, despite Waverley being its third location. The original buildings were designed by Reid and Martin. Blue Plaques serve as permanent markers to acknowledge the historical importance of a particular building or site. They can either signify the relationship between particular important historical figures and a site, or the architecture or purpose of the buildings.
