Netball, which has been revived as a school sport, enters the tough Government School League in 1998, while four teams play in the Private Schools’ League. Basketball becomes an official school sport.
Lize-Mari Retief represents South Africa at swimming (and later, in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing). Roxanne Turner – who will later become St Mary’s hockey coach – plays in the South African hockey team as does Shelley Russell and Lisa-Marie Deetleefs.
The construction of two extra squash courts, bringing the total to four courts, leads to a surge of interest in the sport.
