The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging

General Smuts pleads with the bittereinders (diehards) to surrender to save the remnants of the Afrikaner volk. De la Rey is present at the peace talks and the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging that follows. Having met to discuss peace earlier in 1901, he and Kitchener have, incredibly, formed a friendship.

In 1906 and 1907 Britain grants the Transvaal Colony and the Orange River Colony self-government, paving the way for the creation of a united South Africa.

Gandhi moves to Johannesburg from Natal to represent the rights of Indians in the Transvaal. He opens his own firm of solicitors in central Johannesburg, close to where Gandhi Square is now situated. When, a few years later, the Indian Registration Law requires Indians to carry passes bearing their fingerprints, he adopts his famous non-violent form of protest, satyagraha.
