A great St Mary's scholar

Marie Victoria Williams (born 1882) completes her schooling at St Mary’s College shortly before the South African War begins. She achieves the highest marks, countrywide, for her matriculation. Following a degree in Latin, French and Greek from Newnham College, Cambridge – Miss Holmes-Orr’s alma mater – she returns to Johannesburg and takes up the position of Senior Lecturer in Greek at the newly established University of the Witwatersrand.
