The Royal Family visit in 1947
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and their two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, visit South Africa amid great fanfare. During a radio broadcast to the Commonwealth on her 21st birthday, which she celebrates in South Africa, the future Queen Elizabeth II states: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”
St Mary’s girls are amongst the crowds who wave to the royal family as their car passes along Louis Botha Avenue on its way to Pretoria.
