Nineteen seventy-five is the year in which South Africa is drawn into a full-scale military conflict for the first time since the Korean War: the Border War. Although it has been simmering since 1966, the Border War explodes into a major conflict when Portugal begins losing its colonial grip on Angola in 1974, plunging that country into civil war. The Border War will finally conclude in 1989.
