From the Senior School head's desk: 31 January 2025

As the year begins, I am reminded of the thrill that accompanies starting a new book. There is something magical about turning the first page, filled with anticipation for the story ahead. This sentiment resonates as we embark on the 2025 academic year, inspired by the outstanding achievements of the matric class of 2024. I hope their journey encourages all our girls to strive for excellence.
The excitement of a new year has been amplified by a warm welcome extended to the new members of our St Mary’s community. Our Form I girls and other new pupils have settled in, with the Form I camp providing opportunities to build friendships, experience outdoor adventures and bond as a cohort.
I am also delighted to welcome several new staff members who bring fresh energy, talent and expertise to our school:
• Richard Sibeko – Head of Dramatic Arts
• Marli Oosthuizen – Afrikaans teacher
• Nicole Gillis – Head of diving
• Linda Shannon – Head of squash
• Kayla Moolman – Head of water polo
• Cobus Kruger – Head of aquatics
• Kelsey Mocke – Intern (French and Life Orientation)
• Murendeni Manugeni – Intern (Life Sciences and Natural Sciences)
To all our new pupils and staff, I wish you every success and happiness as you embark on your St Mary’s journey. May your time with us be filled with growth, joy and a profound sense of belonging.
At the end of last year, there were several internal changes I would like to highlight, aimed at strengthening our pastoral team and enhancing the support we provide to the girls:
• Dani Cooper – Head of diversity
• Esmalet van der Merwe – Head of pastoral care
• Danielle McKinnon – Deputy head of pastoral care
• Zimkhitha Raolane – Phelps house tutor
• Ashley Proudfoot – Phelps head of house
• Simon Idema – Furse house tutor
Our chapel services have played an important role in marking the start of the year. The new girls’ chapel service was a beautiful reminder of the values and faith that underpin our community. Similarly, the matric prayer service blessed and strengthened our Form V pupils as they step into their final year. Both these services reflect the significance of grounding our year in reflection, prayer and a shared sense of purpose.
This year, we have embraced a significant change by becoming a cellphone-free zone during academic hours. This decision has garnered considerable media attention. Later in this newsletter, Dr Huysamer and Ms Stichling will provide further insights into this transition. While it presents challenges, we are already witnessing the benefits: increased focus, meaningful interactions and a calmer atmosphere. Although this adjustment will take time, it will enrich the learning experience for our girls.
On the pastoral front, our focus this term has been on the themes of acceptance and belonging. This feels especially fitting, as the absence of distractions like cellphones has encouraged our girls to reconnect, fostering deeper relationships and a stronger sense of community. Through shared experiences, they are rediscovering the value of being present and engaged with those around them. This reconnection underpins our efforts to create an inclusive environment where every girl feels valued and supported.
As we turn the first pages of this year’s story, I am filled with optimism. The friendships rekindled after the long break, our girls' enthusiasm and our staff's vision and dedication have set the stage for what promises to be a remarkable year.
