Form V History subject focus day
On Thursday 15 February, the Form V History pupils visited the Apartheid Museum and Constitutional Hill as part of their annual subject focus day. The girls perused each museum taking note of both primary and secondary sources. An academic assessment was linked to the outing and hopefully, a deeper understanding of apartheid was gained.
While the day was not necessarily enjoyable, as the exhibits and information addressed our difficult and sensitive past, it was without a doubt valuable. Many of the girls found the opportunity to visit such sites both moving and powerful. The class of 2024 was particularly mature in their behaviour and the majority asked pertinent and astute questions. As a department, we were proud of the Form Vs and their level of engagement and empathy. Lessons outside the classroom are often where long-lasting memories are made and educational concepts are truly solidified.
"The history trip to the Apartheid Museum and Constitutional Hill was a profound and educational experience. Walking through the museum, witnessing personal stories and experiences, provided a glimpse into the harsh reality of apartheid, evoking a range of emotions. Visiting the prison cells at Constitutional Hill, particularly those for women and solitary confinement, emphasised the immense challenges and sacrifices made for freedom and equality. This experience served as a moving reminder of education's ability to cultivate empathy and drive meaningful change." Ramadimetja Montjane (Form V)
