Message from the head's desk: 14 July 2023

A school is a busy place and no doubt, St Mary’s School is very busy. There is always so much to include in the weekly Junior and Senior School newsletters.

In contrast, the past two weeks in the Senior School have seemed quiet. There are achievements to report – achievements that may not catch the headlines but are no less worthy, such as the remarkable success of four St Mary’Tres girls in the top 15 of the English Olympiad, which was written by 5800 students.

On reflection, the past two quiet weeks have presented the best of our school: teachers and students have worked through the June examination papers, which is a significant learning experience; the Form Is were challenged to explore entrepreneurial thinking in their Self-eSTEAM module; the teachers played a competitive match against the senior netball team; the spirit squad hosted a well-attended spirit evening, which was captured in mesmerizing video clips; the matrics hosted their final SRC meeting after five years of service representing the student voice.

These events are significant contributors to the ethos of St Mary’s School, and yet without a reflective lens they may seem insignificant and pass unnoticed.

What I want to emphasise about our school is, “everything and everyone counts”.

As our attention turns to a new cohort of leaders, I want to acknowledge the class of 2023 for their valuable contribution to the momentum and school spirit of this year, which has encouraged participation, confidence amongst the girls and ultimately, a general level of success in the school.
