From the Afrikaans Department

Form V Afrikaans students

On Thursday 8 June, the PIT Productions company came to St Mary’s for an interactive performance of the Afrikaans matric setworks. Students from St Mary’s and St Theresa’s School attended.

The performers were extremely energetic and engaging. The students had the opportunity to play some of the characters and answer trivia questions from our Afrikaans IEB set work Donker Web by Fanie Viljoen. This helped us in the performance and made learning about the novel fun.

In addition to the novel, the team also performed several poems. Particularly memorable ones include Sterrekyker by Franci Greyling, which was acted out using ribbons, and Vraagteken by Tanja Joubert, which showcased the team’s cohesion as one person mouthed the words and sounds the others made.

Overall, this was a different and memorable way in which to learn the Afrikaans setworks and it gave us a new appreciation for and understanding of works that we had studied in class. The performers, Tiaan Slabbert, Arno Meyer, Lee Visagie, and director, Zak Hendrikz, did an amazing job.
