Last year ended on a high for the St Mary’s rowing club as we worked hard throughout the examination season to take home a win at the 2019 SA Schools’ Boat Race held in Port Alfred. After a vigorous trialing process, crews were formed and trained throughout the examinations. We commend our second, third, fourth and fifth crews on their outstanding results at the second crews boat race held at Roodeplaat Dam. Soon afterwards, our first crew (Alexandra Pretorius, Catherine Phillips, Emma Gray, Catherine Roberg, Helen Moore and Samantha Pringle) travelled to Port Alfred where they raced superbly to secure St Mary’s sixth consecutive Boat Race win and our 13th win out of the 19 Boat Race races in which we have competed. Samantha Pringle competed in the reserves race, achieving outstanding results. We congratulate our rowers for their hard work and excellent results.

These high spirits were carried through to our January camp where we welcomed our rowers and invited new ones to join us too. Our girls grasped the opportunity to utilise the training they completed throughout the December holiday.

From our newest U14 girls to our seniors, bonds were formed between the girls through team challenges. We commend the rowers for their hard work and look forward to a season of determination and excellent racing.

We are saddened by the massive floods in December that have caused havoc with our national rowing course. There are several drives to get our course functioning again. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Caitlin at caitlin.dace@stmary.co.za
