Roedean Autumn Sports Festival

Hockey

We are proud of both the U14 A and U14 B hockey teams that played in this festival over the past weekend. There were 24 teams playing, 22 of them were A teams, our B team and the hosts, Roedean also had a B team. It was a fantastic weekend of hockey. Friendships, team bonding, heartache, elation and learning were all part of the three days. The B team ended in a well-earned 16th place. The A team played some excellent hockey and made it to the final where, sadly, we lost 1-2 to Collegiate Girls’ High School from Port Elizabeth.

Netball

This festival has been a great event for our U14 netball girls for the past few years. This year was no different, with 11 girls from different Junior Schools joining St Mary’s Senior School netball. This festival offers our girls an opportunity to get to know one another on and off the court. The festival has 17 teams which entered and were placed in two pools.

The festival began on Friday 29 March with the netball girls playing four matches:
St Mary’s vs opponents | Final match scores |
Kingsmead | Won 14 – 8 |
Roedean U14 A | Won 8 – 6 |
St Teresa’s | Won 27 – 4 |
Assumption | Drew 10 – 10 |
Saturday 30 March was the second day of matches, which delivered tough opposition:
St Mary’s vs opponents | Final match scores |
Durban Girls’ College | Lost 8 – 20 |
Collegiate | Lost 12 – 18 |
St Andrew’s | Lost 17 – 7 |
St Mary’s ended fourth in Pool A which meant we had to play semi-finals against Redhill which was first in Pool B.
Pool crossover matches:
Redhill | Lost 18 – 5 |
The third and final day (Sunday 31 March) seemed to bring a fresh mindset and fighting spirit with the previous day being very difficult for our girls.
Having lost our semi-final match against Redhill the previous day, we had to play for positions five to eight. Our first match was against St Andrew’s.
The final score at the end of the match was 11–11. This meant that the girls had to continue playing in extra time to determine the winner for the match. The netball rule for extra time is three minutes per side, giving each team an opportunity to shoot on both sides of the court. Unfortunately, we were not strong enough to pull through a win during extra time and we lost the match 13–15.
Having lost our match against St Andrew’s, we had to play our final match for positions seven and eight against St Dominic’s. The girls played very well and won the match 17–12, finishing in position seven overall.
