Since 1990, on most Saturday mornings during the school year, learners from five schools in Alexandra and surrounding communities attend a school programme called the Ikusasa Lethu Programme (formally, the Alexandra Programme), at St Mary’s School. The programme aims to enhance the learning of the scholars and assist them in accessing tertiary education.

Learners on the programme are taught Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Accountancy, Geography, Economics and Business Studies, and English, by highly-qualified, experienced teachers. This programme has supported many learners over the years and focuses on Grades 10 to 12.

The class of 2018 had 75 matriculants. They achieved a 98.6% pass rate with 60 distinctions, 124 B symbols, 131 C symbols and 81% Bachelor degree passes. The top student on the programme, Khathutshelo Mashiane achieved six distinctions and an overall average of 85%. Khathutshelo obtained 91% for Physical Sciences, and 90% for Mathematics and Life Sciences. Lebohang Ramokonopi achieved an overall average of 83% and six distinctions, including 90% for Mathematics and 90% for Physical Sciences.

The school opened for 2019 with 270 Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 pupils.

In 2018, 117 mentors looked after 140 of our pupils. We need many more mentors to assist this year. Please contact Karabo on 071 777 5687 if you are able to mentor one or two pupils.

In the June/July school holidays, job-shadowing opportunities are arranged for the Grade 11 pupils. Please contact Karabo if your company or business would like to have some pupils visit for a few days.
