Hockey: U14 hockey tournament at DSG, Grahamstown

The U14 A team has come a long way from the team that lost their first match of the season 0-2, back in March. We had a great weekend at DSG as most of our matches were against totally unfamiliar opposition. Friday began well with two good wins, 3-0 vs Somerset College and 4-1 vs York High School. We then came completely unstuck against a highly motivated team from Collegiate, losing 0-2. Good learning came from this loss and we played with maximum determination and effort against Oranje Meisieskool, beating them 1-0 with a fantastic deflection goal from a short corner. The girls then played superbly in the semi-final against Herschel. They stuck to the game plan and, despite dominating the second half, we could not find the back of the net. This resulted in our having to decide the match on eight-second penalties. Sadly, we lost the eight seconds. We lifted our game again on the final morning and beat Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof 2-0 to finish in third place.
