South African Library week celebrations

St Mary’s Senior School library celebrated South African Library Week from 16 to 23 March.

The 2018 theme was Libraries: Heart of the Community.

According to the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), libraries, including school libraries, have positioned themselves between aspiration and delivery.

“Libraries provide support for education and are at the heart of every community. Libraries have shifted from more than books:

  • Libraries connect people, up-skill them, enable creative learning and build communities
  • Libraries are bridging the disparities within communities”

Our school library has done just that. It was a celebration of sorts, from a teen book club launch to fun and games, human rights book display, collaboration with the Drama and Music departments where poetry and music jams were held to a quiz where the participants had to match the lyric to the book.

St Mary’s Senior School library would like to emphasise that the library belongs to the St Mary’s community and is at the heart of it. The library is there to offer vital resources and a place where the community gathers.
