While we wait patiently for the children’s beautiful clay pots to be fired, the focus in the Atelier has been on prehistoric sculpture. The sculptures that the children have studied were carved from bone and rock. The prehistoric artists allowed their medium to “speak” to them, cleverly using stones and bones whose shapes lent themselves to something specific. For instance, the navel that appears to have been carved into the tummy of The Venus of Willendorf, was in fact a natural cavity. Using clay, and only their hands, the Little Saints children made a variety of sculptures inspired by these prehistoric artefacts.
