From the Junior School head's desk: 3 June 2022

My previous newsletter article spoke about the rigours and rewards of collaboration with special reference to the upcoming school play. In the meantime, parents in the Junior School – members of the PA and our class reps in particular – quietly demonstrated the power of effective collaboration in their organisation of the family fun day, which took place on the same day as Little Saints sports day, Saturday, 28 May.

My thanks to the Little Saints teachers, the Junior School Sports department and the Grade 7 girls who supervised and facilitated the activities for sports day at the Howell Hub; also, to the parents, siblings, and grandparents who joined us on the morning and cheered on our little athletes as they participated wholeheartedly at each station by jumping, rolling, running, balancing, hurdling and hurtling to the instructions and encouragement of the team of teachers and girls working with them. It was a bitingly cold morning, but the exuberant playfulness and enjoyment of the children exerting themselves kept us all warm.

The family fun day, also, with its Africa Day themed décor and stalls offering an assortment of activities and refreshments was a heartwarming occasion. In addition to offering the children an opportunity to enjoy themselves with peers and friends on our beautiful school campus, the day also brought our community together to renew old relationships and establish some new connections, too. I am grateful, especially, to Ashlea Barker and Jenny Kydd-Bennett for organising and overseeing the event, and, also, to our Grade 7 fundraising committee and support staff for their hard work on the day. It felt good to see the Junior School so emphatically inhabited again, and to watch our teachers, parents and children simply enjoying time spent in each other’s company.

Of course, the fun and family time does not stop with the family fun day: please remember to consult the app for details of other upcoming events being hosted in the Junior School. We look forward, in particular, to seeing parents and guardians at the series of Family Day services hosted by our chaplain, Revd Rakgadi Khobo, with our children in the school chapel from 13 to 22 June, and we are gratified by your continued spectatorship at sports fixtures and cultural events, including the piece playing concert series kicking off on 14 June.

We are understandably excited by a new initiative undertaken by a group of our Grade 7 girls to keep you informed and intrigued about our school play.

Finally, we are delighted to be launching a new initiative undertaken by a group of our Grade 7 girls, who will be working as a team to document and promote the Junior School play. These girls will keep you informed and intrigued about all developments relating to the production process. Please follow this link for a first taste of things to come:https://youtu.be/kFZDLtpl-gE
