On the Tuesday 5 October, the matric art girls had the chance to exhibit their exceptional artworks. The matric art exhibition is usually a long-awaited event and a highlight of the year. This event exceeded expectations in every way. The exhibition was an enriching experience as all attendees had a chance to see the high standard of artworks which the matric girls have produced. The artworks were displayed throughout The Edge and showed the creativity and talent in the matric art group. The event was enjoyed by the parents of the girls, some of the St Mary’s staff, and a few of the younger art students. The guest speaker, artist Lebo Thoka, gave an inspiring speech to all present and left her audience feeling excited for the future of art. Her advice to the girls was to go towards what pulls them and trust their intuition. As they enter the next phase of their life, this advice could not be more true. The exhibition was a lovely way to celebrate the matric art girls and all they have achieved during the year.

On Friday, 1 October, the Form III and IV art students had the opportunity to experience and interact with an abundance of South African artists and their artworks at the 9th edition of the Turbine Art Fair in Illovo. The multi-layered art fair consisted of hundreds of artworks showcasing various genres of art and movements ranging from abstract expressionism to large contemporary installations. One of the pupils in Form III stated that “a few hours was simply not enough time to fully appreciate all the time and true effort that these amazing artists put into their pieces.” The fair gave the students an opportunity to experience unique pieces that represented South African artists at their peak and it was truly an honour to be involved in such a lovely fair. This was an opportunity that the students completely embraced and, as they absorbed inspiration for their future artworks, they truly enjoyed their experience.

Talking to different artists about the process behind their works was incredibly interesting and gave the students a new perspective on their pieces, going beyond beautiful artworks but also telling of a story. Walking into the venue, there were people from every walk of life all coming together to admire the effort and talent of the hundreds of artists. The display was not only a beautiful space to be in, but also a place of motivation for every girl to experiment with new ideas and push herself to new limits. The experience was engaging and inspirational for many of the artists and we all look forward to visiting more fairs and exhibitions in the future!
