Message from the chaplain: 15 October 2021

The events of the last two weeks can be summed up in the third verse of the hymn O love that will not let me go which reads as follows:

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee.
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
and feel the promise is not vain,
that morn shall tearless be.

A collision of joys! This is the phrase that also comes to mind together with the image of the annunciation, depicted so beautifully in the lunar mosaic above the entrance to the Senior School reception. Following the announcement of the incarnation by the angel Gabriel to Mary, with a heart full of joy, Mary rushes to visit Elizabeth. Of this meeting between Mary and Elizabeth, it is not easy to imagine the collision of joy at this meeting. When we have joy, we yearn to share. What joy it was to celebrate and share in the Eucharist with the matric class of 2021 at their valedictory service.

The confirmation and installation of the chaplain service added to our joy as a school. Bishop Steve, in his sermon, preached on Jeremiah 29. He highlighted that Jeremiah was writing to remind the people that God is not in the business of leaving people up in the air, God loves the people. Jeremiah continued to assure the people that God intends to bless them and that even in our darkest hour, God has a plan.

In our celebrations, we were ever conscious that we are still living in a time of pandemic. That we were able to gather and celebrate is a testament to God’s joy, which is visible through pain.
