At the Senior Primary Eucharist on Wednesday 26 June, several girls were admitted to receive their first Holy Communion, following a period of instruction with me in the weeks prior to the service. As baptism is a requirement for admission to Communion, some girls were also baptised at the service. After the service the girls and their guests enjoyed a tea on the chapel lawns to celebrate the occasion.

The Gospel reading for the day was Matthew 13:44-46:

[Jesus said,] “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it”.

A moment of knowing God’s love is so wonderful that nothing else matters: we would give the world to have a moment like it – akin to buying the entire field, just in case it contains further treasures, or giving up everything just to be able to gaze on the most beautiful pearl we have ever seen. It becomes the “why” of what we do, and the centre of who we are.
