Mathematics
In Forms I and II all the pupils are expected to take Mathematics as a subject and all members of the Maths department teach at least one junior class. From Form III onwards, the girls can choose to either take Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
Mathematics challenges and motivates students to become:
Critical users of information
Ethical reasoners
Problem solvers
Creative and reflective thinkers
Lifelong students
Members of society, respectful of diversity
Mathematics also:
Enhances mathematical creativity and logical reasoning
Observes patterns and relationships, leading to more abstract relations
Enhances mathematical problem solving to understand the world in greater depth
The Mathematics department administers and designs the curriculum not only to cover the outcomes needed to complete the external examination at the end of a girl’s Form V year, but also to equip her with the very important skills of thinking independently and to tackle unknown situations with confidence and creativity.
The department is diverse, enthusiastic and creative, and consistently re-evaluates and adjusts teaching methods and the use of technology to keep up with the ever-changing education landscape.
Further Studies Mathematics (Advanced Programme Mathematics)
We offer Further Studies Mathematics as an optional, additional subject in Forms III, IV and V. An extension of Mathematics, Further Studies Mathematics forms part of the IEB’s International Secondary Certificate and can be offered on either the standard (only the core model) or extended (core model and one optional model) levels. The pass mark for Further Studies Mathematics is 50%
Mathematical Literacy:
Mathematical Literacy, which is accepted at university faculties where core Mathematics is not a prerequisite, is offered as a matriculation subject from Form III at St Mary’s.
The subject focuses on real-life situations and is perfect for the girl who finds difficulty with the more abstract facets of core Mathematics. It enables girls to approach problems with confidence and allows them to discover methods that work for them, equipping them with techniques, knowledge, skills, values and attitudes for self-fulfilment and growth.
