The tennis season ended on a high note on Saturday 2 March with three St Mary’s teams participating in the annual A and B inter-high competitions.

The A St Mary’s team played excellent tennis throughout the morning to beat all teams in their pool and their opposition in the semi-final to reach the finals where they lost to a very strong Helpmekaar team. Helpmekaar turned the tables on the league result earlier in the week when St Mary’s won the league, beating Helpmekaar in a convincing manner. The St Mary’s team competed well in the finals and gave their best effort but fell short of retaining the title. Congratulations to Sarah Millard, Ruth Moore, Annika Gertenbach and Hannah Moore on their high standard of play. Twenty-five schools competed in the inter-high event.

The B inter-high was also played and this event is for players ranked from 5-8. The St Mary’s B team played tennis of an extremely high standard to win all the matches in their pool and in the playoffs, beating Helpmekaar B in the final. Congratulations to Amukelani Mokone, Lilitha Ndungane, Izabela Gyulbudaghyan and Alexis Banducci on winning the B inter-high title for the eleventh year in a row. St Mary’s also entered a C team in the B inter-high and this team achieved an excellent seventh placing. Twenty- four schools participated in the B inter-high. Thank you to Ms Murray and Mrs Lowndes for taking the time to look after all the B and C teams respectively, to all the parents for their support, and to all the staff for coming to support the tennis players.

I thank all the tennis players for all their hard work, and commitment over the past season. It has been a very successful season on and off the court. I thank the matrics for all their hard work and commitment to St Mary’s tennis over the past five years. They have laid a fantastic foundation on which St Mary’s tennis will continue to grow and thrive. I thank the captains who have led their team from the front, with diligence and enthusiasm. A big thank you is extended to Ms Murray for all her help on and off the court and to Mrs Lowndes and Mrs Ingersent for accompanying the teams on Tuesdays.
