Water polo has grown since its inception in 2007 in both the Junior and Senior Schools. St Mary’s had 21 girls chosen to represent Central Gauteng in the National Provincial Schools’ Tournament in Cape Town at the end of 2011.
St Mary’s is one of the few schools that can field teams in all of the water polo age groups, namely, U13, U14, U15, 2nd and 1st Team levels.
Our 1st Team have had a season of mixed results over the 2011/2012 season. They won the National Aquatics Festival in Durban and came 15th overall in the Old Petrian’s Tournament.
Roedean and Old Mutual have together started a 1st Team Tournament which comprises the top 10 schools in Gauteng. It is an amazing initiative whereby the water polo community are ‘giving back’ to disadvantaged schools. A disadvantaged school is chosen by each school and then they implement Learn to Swim programmes. The 1st Team came 5th overall in this League.
This past season, Crawford College Lonehill introduced an U15 Girls’ Tournament, the Shaun Fuchs Cup. Schools participated from all over South Africa and the U15 Team finished 2nd to Reddam College Cape Town.
St Mary’s Junior Teams have been outstanding this last season from U13 though to the 2nd Team where they have been unbeaten in all their games. This bodes well for the future of water polo at St Mary’s.
