The Aquatics Centre is a hive of activity in the summer terms and our Olympic-size pool has made it possible for many girls to participate various aquatics activities simultaneously. For the most, part the bulkhead is positioned halfway across the pool and we work with two 25m pools. The exception to this is a Saturday morning during the first term when we move the bulkhead to 50m and the Junior and Senior school teams have a session over the Olympic distance.
It is an awesome sight during the summer terms to see the Junior A, B and C swimming teams all hard at work, a group of social swimmers having their lesson and a large group of divers using all five diving boards and the platform! Swimming remains a popular sport at St Mary’s. We have plans to heat the pool in order to derive maximum usage from this superb facility.
In the Senior School we have A and B swimming teams and, this year, the A team were the runners-up in the Interhigh Premier Gala in the swimming section. The Overall trophy, which is awarded for both the swimming and diving points, was won by St Mary’s last year and we missed it by half a point this year. The B team is the current holder of the Interhigh A Gala trophy.
We hosted another successful Summer Splash. This is a gala held for ten local schools that have Junior and Senior teams which swim as a combined team from U9 to U19.
We travelled to Durban to swim in the National Aquatics Festival. This is a high-powered gala involving ten schools from around the country. We were able to maintain our 4th place at this event and were the proud winners of the diving and waterpolo.
