Swimming

The world class facility of our newly built Aquatics Centre has made a significant difference to this sport at St Mary’s. Senior Team swimmers pound the lanes on either side of the bulkhead during early morning training and between 13h45 and 14h45 in the first or third terms, you will see the Junior A, B and C swimming teams all hard at work, a group of social swimmers having their lesson and a large group of divers using all five diving boards and the platform! Swimming remains a most popular sport at St Mary’s.

In the Senior School we have an A and B swimming team and this year we are the holders of the Interhigh Shield (A team) and the Interhigh A Gala trophy (B team). We hosted and won the Summer Splash. This is a gala held for ten local schools that have a Junior and Senior team that swim as a combined team from U9 to U19. In 2010 we also hosted and won the National Aquatics Festival. This is a gala involving ten schools from around the country. Our Guest of Honour was ex-St Mary’s pupil, Lize-Mari Retief, who represented South Africa at both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Currently, there are three Sport Honours Blazers for swimming awarded to: Jeanie du Toit, Jo-Mari van Zyl and Jessica Bartram who have all represented South Africa at different events.
