St Mary's holds the record for the most number of teams entered by any one school and, such is the current strength and depth of squash that this year, that we even entered two teams in the prestigious U19A league, U16A and U14A leagues in order to provide more of our players with strong opposition.
Many of the girls participate in outside tournaments which help to improve their standard of play and also assist them in their quest for provincial representation. This year, 12 St Mary’s girls will represent Central Gauteng in the various age groups.
The Central Gauteng Top Schools’ Tournament was held in May to determine which Johannesburg-based school will go forward to the National Top Schools’ Tournament always held at Epworth School in Pietermaritzburg in August. St Mary's played two teams in the local event with the A Team winning with maximum points and the B Team finishing in 3rd place. St Mary’s will aim for a top four finish in the National event.
The thud of squash balls hitting the court walls and the laughter of the girls reflect the fun and hard work which go into this sport.
