It would seem that Hockey and St Mary’s are synonomous. Ros Howell, our Deputy Principal, is a past National player and Captain, as well as being the coach of the South African team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. We are also proud of the five St Mary’s Old Girls who have represented South Africa in the past two years.
It was stated at the Hockey Dinner last year that, between Ros Howell, Gail Murray and Quix, we are arguably the best coaching trio of any girls’ school in the country. This year the coaching team has improved even further and we have seven excellent coaches taking care of our 14 teams.
2010 saw us host the biggest Hockey Festival yet, and the quality of play was the highest we have ever experienced. The St Mary’s 1st Team shared the title with Menlo Park after a goalless draw in the final.
This year we made a decision to give our girls the opportunity of playing as much hockey as possible. To this end, we entered our A and B Teams into the Grays League and our C and D Teams have joined the Malik League. This means they will play all the A and B Teams of the schools that are in the League and there are guaranteed regular matches.
