The aerobics programme at St Mary’s has been run in the School’s gymnasium for the past two years and has a strong objective. We aim to achieve long term compliance and adherence to fun and fitness for our girls. The classes are structured to use current music and the movements incorporate choreography from jazz, ballet and contemporary dance. Classes include a warm- up component, followed by an aerobic routine (cardio vascular), then a muscle strengthening and endurance section, finishing with a final stretching routine.
The girls’ anatomical knowledge and understanding of human biomechanics is also strongly reinforced. Safety and form are paramount. The girls also get the chance to experience music: instrument recognition, the beats, working to the music and how this translates to movement. The class is non-competitive and aims to complement the traditional sports that take place on the field. The girls work at their own pace and are encouraged to participate in other group and individual sports.
The smiles on the girls’ faces epitomise the enjoyment they get from applying functional movement to music.
