Information Technology is applied through the International Computer Drivers Licence (ICDL). These skills include basic computer skills and word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and databases. While the ICDL course is a subject on its own, it encompasses many of the IT skills learned at School. We offer courses in graphic design, computers and music and, lastly, computers and visuals. These skills will prepare the student for current and future projects she may have to complete. It is also our hope to inspire creative thinkers and innovative ideas through the use of technology currently available.

St Mary’s School has a fully wireless campus and well-equipped computer laboratories for use by the girls. Most classrooms have Interactive White Boards which promote a visual element in the teaching environment. We aim to produce young women who are able to use Information Technology effectively and confidently.

ICDL

The International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) is an end-user standard certificate. No programming is taught. Obtaining the ICDL is challenging and time consuming. The student has to pass each of seven modules, and the level of competence expected is very high. The minimum pass rate is 75% per module within a period of 5 years. The standards for the ICDL have been set jointly by the major European Computer Societies. To qualify for an ICDL one must pass each of the following modules:

1. Basic Concepts – This covers vocabulary, applications and use of computers, IT and society, and other general issues. The automated test comprises a multiple-choice test.
2. Using the computer and managing files deals with how to use the operating system. The test is a practical one.
3. Word Processing – This module requires basic word processing skills, plus such advanced tasks as mail merge and integration with spreadsheets and graphics. The test is a practical one.
4. Spreadsheets – This requires an intensive knowledge of Excel. The test is a practical one.
5. Databases – This module requires the user to use and set up databases. The test is practical.
6. Presentation Tools – This module deals with the intricacies of PowerPoint and its exploration. The test is practical.
7. Information Networks – The use of electronic mail and information retrieval are the focus of this module. The automated test is a multiple choice test, followed by a practical one.
