The St Mary’s School Aquatics Centre was officially be opened on Saturday 24 January 2009. The red ribbon was cut by the Chairman of the Board, Nigel Carman, Natalie du Toit and Lize-Mari Retief, a St Mary’s past pupil and 2008 South African Olympic Team swimmer. To celebrate the Opening St Mary’s hosted an Inaugural Aquatics Festival on 23 and 24 January. The programme featured Diving, Swimming and Waterpolo. The swimming gala was a relay gala (with four individual events) where Senior and Junior Schools combined to swim a fun but competitive gala over both the short course (25m) and long course (50m) pools. This gala was the first to feature combined junior and senior school teams swimming in a 25m and 50m pool. The participating schools were St Mary’s School, Roedean, St Andrew’s, Kingsmead, Holy Rosary, Brescia House, St Stithians, St Dominic’s, Pretoria Girls’ High and Auckland Park Preparatory School. The Centre has been designed to International FINA standards and has a movable bulkhead which allows the adjustment of the size of the pool from 50m to two 25m pools, to suit the age of the swimmers, as well as for using the pool for simultaneous training sessions and creating the appropriate size waterpolo pool. The diving facilities are exceptional, featuring a 5m platform, two 3m and two 1m and ½ m diving boards which can accommodate synchronized diving, a new Olympic Sport.
