The St Mary’s concept of boarding is a far cry from the traditional and sometimes impersonal boarding establishment of the past. The four boarding homes are positioned in lovely gardens and accommodate a relatively small number of pupils which allows us to simulate a family atmosphere.

Each of the boarding homes is run by a house mother. She is a professional member of staff who monitors the academic, emotional and social progress of the girls. In addition, each boarding home has an assistant house mother and a student tutor who assists with weekend duties.

Comments from Lara Rickard & Teta Gisa – Matric 2008

The term “boarding school” tends to create images of sterile dormitories, strict matrons and unappetising food, but not at St Mary’s. Here, boarding is an incredible experience filled with many opportunities to form lifelong friendships, to learn about tolerance and compromise, to gain independence and most importantly to create amazing memories.

Who could ever forget our midnight birthday singing episodes, tanning sessions (for some!), movie nights, English Department tea parties, mall visits, trick-or-treating around the neighbourhood and simple everyday happenings (like walking into the glass door)?

With memories like these we’ll most certainly be able to remember our boarding days with smiles on our faces.

|
We are so grateful to all the Boarding Mums, Student Carers and Helpers. It is largely because of them that St Mary’s Boarding is what it is. So guys, keep solving the problems of the world around the kitchen table while drinking tea and eating toast, keep playing your radios at volume 752 and keep being the fantastic people that you are.
