A House system was introduced in the 1930s and the four Houses, Clayton, Furse, Karney and Phelps were named after Anglican bishops. The Houses were then and remain today an integral part of school life.
House meetings and events unite girls from different forms with different abilities in a spirit of camaraderie. The regular inter-House events: sporting (tennis, hockey, squash, swimming, diving, rowing and basketball), music and drama, give Form Is to matrics a chance to participate on a friendly, competitive basis. Academic achievements contribute towards House points, as do ‘mentions'. Girls are given mentions for achievements beyond the normal scope of school work or commitments. The inter-House competitions enable girls to enjoy and challenge themselves in areas that are not necessarily their forte. Community service and charity work are encouraged. There is an annual Lent collection of winter garments and visiting the charities and handing over articles is a meaningful experience for members of the Houses. The coveted House cup is awarded every term at Final Assembly.
