The Spiritual Pillar is a very important part of St Mary's. Although we embrace all the different religions and cultures, we are an Anglican school.
We are fortunate to have Father Bailey from St Luke's Anglican Church as our Chaplain as well as our School Chaplain Rev Gill Lee. Each Wednesday morning the girls in the Senior Primary attend Chapel, while the Junior Primary girls attend Chapel on a Friday. The pupils in Little Saints attend Chapel once a term.
At the beginning and end of each term the Senior Primary girls have a Communion Service. We have a Mother's Day Service in May and a Father's Day Service in June. At the end of the year the Grade 0's celebrate Christmas with a Nativity Play in the Chapel and all the other girls have a combined Carol Service with the Senior School during the last week of the third term.
The girls have weekly Divinity and Life Orientation lessons. As part of the Life Orientation in the Senior Primary, we invite Lana Levin (a Clinical Psychologist) to do a series of talks with the girls. In the Grade 4 year she guides the children and teaches them skills and gives them information, to help them form sound friendships. At the Grade 5 level the talk is "A Journey of Discovery ....... a Journey of ME!" In Grade 6 and 7 the talks revolve around "Blossoming Me" which includes relaxation exercises to help the girls during times of anxiety. Talks are also offered during the year for parents. These deal with parenting, discipline and other areas of interest. There are also "Muse Mornings" organised by Heidi Burkhalter and hosted at SMOGS. Heidi heads up our 'Open Door' which provides counselling for our pupils.
In the Senior Primary there are Buddy Groups which are mixed groups of girls from Grade 4 - Grade 7 who meet twice a term for a picnic. This is an opportunity for them to get to know each other and have contact with pupils outside their grade.
We have Tutor Groups for pupils in Grade 7. The girls divide themselves up into groups of 8 -10 pupils and are then allocated a teacher that has volunteered to mentor these pupils for the year. These groups meet at least twice a month during break and discuss various matters which are relevant to the group.
As part of the Spiritual Pillar we involve the girls in various community services and charity projects. Most of these community services are driven by the Grade 7 pupils as part of their 'Making the Most of Me' program. During the year they decide which charities they would like to support and then encourage the School to bring items for their collections. They also go on Community Service visits which vary according to the interests of the girls. On Valentine's Day they take chocolates to the residents of a nearby Retirement Home and posies of flowers on Spring Day. They have taken clothing and food to the Maria Kloppers Home and collected cat and dog food for the SPCA. The girls are encouraged to be aware of the needs of the community around them and have special collections to help meet some of the needs.
As part of Market Day the pupils give a percentage of their profit towards charity. This money is used to help sponsor a pupil at Vuleka School, many of whom are Aids orphans.
At the end of the year the Grade 6 pupils host a tea for the Grannies and Granddads from the surrounding Retirement Homes. The girls are responsible for decorating the table, organising eats and bringing a small gift for the guests at their table. The morning is rounded off by the Choir who entertain everyone with their beautiful voices.
