Project Edge - The New Education Centre |
|
|
|
|
It is essential that St Mary's girls receive a well-rounded and balanced education, which means excellent tuition and coaching in academic, sporting, spiritual and creative disciplines. Over the past few years we have built the Desmond Tutu Natural Sciences Block and the Clare Rossouw Media Centre, we have a wonderful Astroturf Hockey field and our magnificent new Aquatics Centre.
It is in the creative arena that St Mary's requires development. The current creative facilities have become dated and inadequate for the size of the school. The St Mary's Board believes that construction of an Education Centre that will house Music, Art, Dance and Drama facilities as well as additional classroom space for the Language Department, is visionary and will provide the creative balance in the education of a St Mary's girl.
Creativity, innovation and originality are in high demand in the workplace and people who demonstrate creativity are at a distinct advantage. Creative skills will be key differentiators for our girls in the future.
World-class facilities help us create a virtuous circle:
- Attract the best creative teachers
- Attract the best creative students
- Build a reputation that current, future pupils and Old Girls can be proud of.
The Education Centre will be constructed at the west end of the Senior School Close and will be known as Project Edge. Not only is it at the edge of the Close, it places St Mary's at the leading edge of education and will provide the girls with a leading edge.

The St Mary's School Aquatics Centre was officially opened on Saturday 24 January 2009. The red ribbon was cut by the Chairman of the Board, Nigel Carman, Natalie du Toit and Lize-Mari Retief, a St Mary's past pupil and 2008 South African Olympic Team swimmer.
To celebrate the Opening St Mary's hosted an Inaugural Aquatics Festival on 23 and 24 January. The programme featured Diving, Swimming and Waterpolo.
The swimming gala was a relay gala (with four individual events) where Senior and Junior Schools combined to swim a fun but competitive gala over both the short course (25m) and long course (50m) pools. This gala was the first to feature combined junior and senior school teams swimming in a 25m and 50m pool.
The participating schools were St Mary's School, Roedean, St Andrew's, Kingsmead, Holy Rosary, Brescia House, St Stithians, St Dominic's, Pretoria Girls' High and Auckland Park Preparatory School.
The Centre has been designed to International FINA standards and has a movable bulkhead which allows the adjustment of the size of the pool from 50m to two 25m pools, to suit the age of the swimmers, as well as for using the pool for simultaneous training sessions and creating the appropriate size waterpolo pool. The diving facilities are exceptional, featuring a 5m platform, two 3m and two 1m and ½ m diving boards which can accommodate synchronized diving, a new Olympic Sport.

The Clare Rossouw Media Centre was opened on the 9 November 2006 by Thandi Chaane. The Media Centre is named after Clare Rossouw who was Headmistress of the Junior School from 1985 -1997. It is appropriate that the Media Centre is named after her as Clare is an avid book lover and was a Library Lecturer at the Johannesburg College of Education in the 1970's.
